The technology explosion that has taken place in recent times has prompted Rep. Bernie O’Neill (R-Bucks) to introduce legislation that would set statewide standards for business, computer and information technology courses.

“As a long-time member of the House Education Committee, I have observed that our education system is lacking in academic standards for information technology courses that relate to business,” said O’Neill. “We live in a world that operates almost completely on computers and associated technology, and I believe we must update our educational system to meet the demands of our time, and to keep pace with the future.”

The legislation contained in House Bill 870 would specifically direct the secretary of education to create academic standards that would help ensure success for students in the post-secondary phase of their education, and in the business world. 

Areas covered by the legislation include business communication, international business, marketing, management, business law, accounting, economics, personal finance, computation, entrepreneurship and information systems.

The bill currently sits in the House Appropriations Committee.
