Dog owners who missed out on Rep. Bernie O’Neill’s (R-Bucks) canine blood drive in March will now have another opportunity to participate in the life-saving event on Saturday, May 2.
The canine blood drive, operated by the Penn Animal Blood Bank of the University of Pennsylvania’s College of Veterinary Medicine, will run from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the parking lot of O’Neill’s Warminster district office, which is located next to Perkins’ Restaurant on York Road.
“As pet owners know, dogs suffer many of the same injuries and ailments as people, and they, too, are in need of life-saving blood transfusions,” said O’Neill, a long-time dog owner and advocate of animal protection legislation. “This canine blood drive allows dogs to help other dogs in need and to receive a free health screening at the same time.”
He noted that each unit of donated blood can help save the life of one, two or three critically ill dogs.
Canine volunteers should be willing donors, weigh between 55 and 150 pounds, range from ages 1 to 6 years old, be in excellent health with good temperament, and have a blood type that is DEA 1.1 negative. A simple blood test will be performed on site to test for the dog’s blood type.
O’Neill has held two other successful canine blood drives within the past few months and is encouraging owners of dogs who meet the criteria to participate and register. To participate, dog owners must contact Janine Bishop in O’Neill’s district office at (215) 441-2624 by Tuesday, April 28.
